Art-Line Resist Pen
By Malibu Tile Works

Art-Line Resist was developed for the serious artist. Based on the old-world technique known as "cuerda seca" or dry-line, this formula will resist the flow of wet glazes so that they will remain separate until fired. Art-Line Resist works best at Cone 04 - 06, but many artists have used this formula at higher temperatures. I recommend testing at higher temperatures to guarantee satisfactory results for your particular needs.
Art-Line Resist will fuse onto work during glaze firing and will create a permanent - sealed outline around the brilliant colors.

How to use your Art-Line Resist Pen:
The Art-Line Resist Pen has been designed to allow you total artistic freedom to create ceramic works of art.

To prepare for use: Shake before use and periodically during use. With the cap on, shake the pen until you hear the shaker rattle inside of pen - (if the shaker does not loosen readily, tap the cap end of pen on a hard surface to loosen shaker)- then continue to shake for 10-15 seconds. (When the Art-Line Resist Pen is motionless, it is natural for the formula to separate.) There is a shaker inside of each pen which will blend the formula for use when the pen is shaken. Pull cap off and lower to work. Experiment to achieve the pressure needed to obtain desired line width. Very little pressure is needed for proper fluid flow. For more consistent lines, try to avoid squeezing and keep fluid supply at tip of pen to a minimum.

The cap acts as a pump to force fluid back into the pen as you push it on. If the pen should become clogged, it can usually be freed by using the cap as a pump. For stubborn cases, there is a clean-out wire included (below) with each pen to open up the most difficult clogs. When not in use, keep pen cap on with pen needle upright and store out of direct sunlight. (The cap fits snugly onto needle -insert needle carefully into hole in cap -then push cap completely onto pen.) After applying the resist onto your ceramic ware, allow to dry.

Dry time can vary depending on the absorbency of ware, but should be a minimum of 1 hour or until lines appear slightly chalky and resist glaze adequately. Apply glaze from a Glaze Applicator or squeeze bottle with a Glazing Hook or other detailer tip. If brushing glaze on, try to avoid smudging lines by using a soft stroke with glaze which has been thinned to the consistency of cream (or thinner). Allow glaze to dry completely before firing ware.

Warning: Handle Art-Line Resist carefully. This formula contains ingredients that can be toxic if ingested. Use only in a well ventilated area and do not ingest. Wash hands thoroughly after use. Always test before using in large quantities to make sure that the consistency of the Art-Line Resist and the glazes are correct.
